50 Kent at Bushwick Inlet Park was originally imagined as a popup park to be open only on weekends, but after a year of design and construction, this seemingly endless lush open space has opened as a permanent public park.
Bushwick Inlet Park is the centerpiece of the Greenpoint-Williamsburg Waterfront, and 50 Kent, the 1.89 acre section of park has no shortage of amazing features.
Plenty of stone and bench seating can be found throughout the park, as well as a green building with a green roof, a viewing platform, a playground, a water feature, and public access to the waterfront with stunning views of the East River, the Manhattan Skyline, and the evolving Greenpoint and Williamsburg landscape.
There’s even a multipurpose field that can be used for a number of sports including soccer, football, lacrosse, rugby, frisbee, and field hockey.
Bushwick Inlet Park is a 27-acre piece of land that sits along the East River at the meeting point of Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Officially designated in 2005, the park was a gift from the City of New York to the community as part of a massive rezoning.
Funding was initially approved for the 50 Kent section of the park in 2017, and the design was approved two years later in 2019. This section is the second of five to be activated for public use.
Both natural and urban structures are incorporated throughout 50 Kent, and thousands of plantings are slowly making their way up from the ground including many young canopy and understory trees, flowering plants, ornamental grasses, and shrubs to support pollinators and birds.
NYers can take advantage of this massive green space by attending a number of the park’s free events which include:
- Weeding Wednesdays, Every Wednesday 6p.m. – 7:30p.m.
Weed, mulch, tend bushes and blossoms, and plant and water when necessary.
- Summer Music in BIP with BombaYo, August 11, 6:30p.m. – 8p.m.
BombaYo ignites the ancestral rhythms of Bomba, an African derived music and dance tradition developed in Puerto Rico.
The event calendar is not yet updated for events past September 7, 2022 (the last Weeding Wednesday as of now), but keep an eye on it to see what other fun events the park will have to offer!
Bushwick Inlet Park has two locations open and accessible to the public: 86 Kent Ave. between N. 9 St. and N. 10 St., and 50 Kent Ave., between N. 11 St. and N. 12 St. Both parks are open from 7a.m. – 10p.m.
