Bryant Park’s beloved free summer tradition is officially heading back into Midtown this June, bringing hundreds of fast-moving players, plenty of chaotic energy, and the kind of delightfully unserious competition that NYC somehow manages to turn into a full-contact sport.
🪑 NYC’s Most Unhinged Summer Tradition
Each summer, Bryant Park hosts a massive game of musical chairs, and this year it’s returning for its 12th iteration on Monday, June 8th at 6:30 pm, turning Midtown into a battleground for nostalgia.
What started years ago as a simple tribute to a childhood pastime has quickly spiraled into a wildly competitive spectacle.
Think: fast-paced eliminations, intense strategy, roaring crowds, and fully grown adults fighting for green bistro chairs in the middle of Manhattan.
📣 The Rules Of The Game
This year’s event will feature hundreds of participants, with circles of 30 players battling it out at a time for a seat in the coveted winner’s circle–and the ultimate title of NYC Musical Chair Champ.
The rules are exactly how you remember them from recess, just amplified to New York standards:
- Players circle around a row of chairs while a live DJ plays music
- The second the music stops, everyone rushes to grab a seat
- The player left standing is eliminated each round
- One chair is removed after every round until only one winner remains
Needless to say, it’s NYC’s largest game of musical chairs, with finalists competing to take home a fabulous grand prize.

Participating in musical chairs at Bryant Park is completely free and operates strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. You must be physically present to check in and secure your spot in the circle.
Thankfully, the game is not BYOC (bring your own chair)–you’ll be using the park’s iconic green bistro chairs.
