Navigating the NYC subway with a stroller, heavy luggage, or mobility needs is no easy feat. But some much-needed relief is on the way for Brooklynites!
The MTA just announced a massive accessibility upgrade for five subway stations in Brooklyn. This project is completely funded by the revenues from congestion pricing.
These improvements arrive right as the MTA celebrates Disability Pride Month this July.
Which stations are getting upgrades?
The selected stops were specifically chosen to fill in major geographic gaps in the system’s accessibility. Here is the breakdown of where the new elevators are heading:
- Neptune Av (F): One new elevator. The work also includes a new street-level headhouse and reconstructing the full length of the platform edges.
- 18 Av (D): Two new elevators directly from the street to the platform level.
- Jefferson St (L): Two new elevators. This underground stop will also get a new street-to-platform stair.
- Nostrand Av (A, C): Three new elevators. As a busy express station, it will also see a new headhouse built on property acquired by the MTA.
- Fort Hamilton Pkwy (D): Two new elevators taking riders right from the street to the platform.
More than just elevators
This project goes beyond just adding lifts. The MTA is also doing extensive station repairs to ensure safety and functionality.
Riders can expect to see platform repairs, upgraded fare arrays, replaced staircases, and new security enhancements at these five locations.
What’s next for the project?
The MTA has officially issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to find a design-builder for the project. Qualified firms have until September 14 to submit their proposals. The MTA intends to award the design-build contract by the end of the year.
This is all part of the MTA’s 2020-2024 Capital Plan, which is receiving a massive $15 billion boost from congestion pricing. These five Brooklyn spots join 20 other stations already slated for accessibility improvements funded by the toll program.
