The holidays are on our heels and there’s no better place to celebrate Kwanzaa than at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
Returning for its 17th annual iteration, Celebrate Kwanzaa will invite people of all ages to come together to honor tradition, principles and the spirit of Kwanzaa.
Kwanzaa is an annual cultural celebration, from December 26th through January 1st, of African and African-American heritage that dedicates each of the holiday’s seven days to one of the seven principles: Umoja (Unity); Kujichagulia (Self-determination); Ujima (Collective work and responsibility); Ujamaa (Cooperative economics); Nia (Purpose); Kuumba (Creativity); Imani (Faith).
Brooklyn Children Museum’s five-day festival is in partnership with Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation, a Brooklyn-based non-profit that uplifts “all things artful of Africa — in full — in America.”
Chinua Baraka Payne and the dynamic Asase Yaa Youth Ensemble will lead a daily candle-lighting ceremony, while each day of the festival will bring new unique experiences for attendees. These exciting happenings include: performances with Kudo NYC, FIYAA (Forces of Nature Incredible Youth Arts Alliance), dance and drumming workshops, graffiti-inspired artwork in ColorLab and more.
Atiba T. Edwards, President and CEO at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, said:
“This year, we celebrate the theme ‘Our Children Enlighten the Community,’ reminding us that Kwanzaa is not only a time to reflect on the values that uplift our community but also a moment to center the voices and talents of our youth…As we mark our 17th year as New York City’s largest and longest-running family Kwanzaa celebration, we’ll see our young people embody the principles of Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), and Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) through their creative expressions and leadership.”
