The Bronx Music Hall, the borough’s first newly constructed music venue in half a century, is opening its doors this weekend, providing a highly-anticipated cultural outlet for the borough.
This 14,000 square-foot space was a nearly $16 million undertaking developed by the nonprofit Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDco), and it intends to celebrate all disciplines from music and dance to theater and interdisciplinary art. Needless to say, it’s sure to become one of the top attractions of the Bronx, and it is expected to attract 20,000 visitors annually.
“This facility will not only honor the Bronx’s musical legacy but also provide vital opportunities for education, employment, and economic growth,” said NYCREDC Co-Chairs Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, the City University of New York Chancellor, and William D. Rahm. “The NYCREDC is thrilled to see this project come to fruition and looks forward to its positive impact on the community.”
After a grand opening weekend of performances celebrating the sounds of the Caribbean and African Diaspora, the space will hold events, classes, film screenings, theater productions, and so much more. And it will celebrate and honor the rich diversity of the borough and the various genres it’s known for, like rap and r&b, as well as Latin jazz and salsa.
Davon Russell, President of WHEDco said, “We are delighted to welcome Bronxites and visitors from near and far to experience live performances and immerse themselves in the rich history, diversity, and brilliance of Bronx music.”
