Are you still grieving over CBGB’s and L’Amours (we are!)? Don’t stress metal heads, there are many nooks and crannies in this city for us! Here’s a few of our favorite spots to bang your head to the heaviest, shreddiest riffs in NYC.
1. Duff’s
Nothing compares to this Brooklyn favorite! Duff’s is right off of Marcy Ave. (J and Z train stop) and this no frills basement shindig is a dream for anyone who’s into metal. They have a jukebox filled with everything from Judas Priest and Sabbath to Killswitch Engage and Lamb of God. It’s at the top spot for a reason and one we’ve been going to for a while!
Band and concert memorabilia are all over the walls and ceilings, there’s always something new to spot. This “Metal Mecca” has been rocking since 1999! You’ll never know who you might run into, bands are in there all the time. It’s a go to spot if you want to keep partying after a metal show.
Where: 168 Marcy Ave. Brooklyn
2. Lucky 13 Saloon
Lucky 13 is not only a bar but a music venue and space that holds a wide range of events! Bands have gigs there but there’s also various events like Drag King Bing, movie screenings and so much more. Complete with skull door handles, GoGo Girls, cool bartenders and a stellar jukebox, we understand why it’s a go-to spot for anyone who loves heavy music!
Where: 644 Sackett St, Brooklyn
3. Otto’s Shrunken Head
Whether you’re a little bit metal or a little bit punk rock, Otto’s is a mood! A Punk tiki bar? Sign us up! Their calendar is filled with events including a Surf-rock
Shindig, poetry jams, punk rock happy hours and so much more. There are so many classic and frozen tiki drinks as well as alcohol-free concoctions. And these drinks come in the cutest tiki mugs!
Where: 538 East 14th St.
4. TV EYE
We’re desperately missing catching gigs at Saint Vitus Bar but some of the programming has moved over to TV EYE. It’s much more than just a venue or just a bar, it has multiple rooms and even a secret bar. There is also a daily happy hour from 5-7pm and food is available after 6pm.
(Saint Vitus Presents shows happening at The Meadow, Brooklyn Monarch & more, for a full list go here!)
Where: 1647 Weirfield St. Ridgewood, NY (on the Bushwick border)
5. Gold Sounds
This is another spot that has a lot of shows presented by Vitus but various genres are showcased. They’re also the only bar on the list that has a fully vegan menu. They’re burgers and sandwiches are made with oyster mushrooms and even their aiolis are vegan.
Where: 44 Wilson Ave.
