Grab your pinkest outfit: a Barbie exhibit has touched down in NYC, and we couldn’t be more delighted about its arrival. What better way to celebrate the doll’s 65th anniversary?
The Museum of Arts and Design, a creative gem in Columbus Circle, will do the honors of hosting the traveling show Barbie®: A Cultural Icon, which is sure to rise to the top of best NYC exhibits.
All about the Barbie exhibit
Visitors of all ages will find a lot to love in this hidden gem of a museum: 250 vintage dolls, life-size fashion designs, advertisements, exclusive video interviews with the doll’s designers, and so much more. MAD notes there are plenty of memorable moments along the way, like fashion looks from the ’70s to the 2000s, the creation of the Barbie Dreamhouse, and learning how Christie, the first Black doll, and Ken came to be. And should you appreciate a good selfie, you’ll be pleased to know a life-size Barbie Mirror-Pink Corvette is zipping into the space, and it has your name written all over it.
“More than simply a toy for make-believe and role play, Barbie has responded to and reflected nearly every significant social advancement over the last six decades,” Tim Rodgers, Nanette L. Laitman Director, Museum of Arts and Design, said in a statement. “We are tickled ‘pink’ to welcome Barbie to the MAD this fall. The Museum has long been interested in the cultural impact of art and design in all spheres, including pop culture.”
More than a trip down memory lane, Barbie: The Exhibit has an important purpose.
“For the past 65 years, Barbie has used her global platform to empower girls to dream big, explore their limitless potential, and direct their own narrative to shape their future,” said Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls. “As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we recognize over six decades of stories Barbie has helped write and the doll that continues to give everyone the opportunity to dream – and dream big.”
We couldn’t agree more, and we’re hopping in her cute ride as we speak. Visit MAD online for ticketing information[/trackLink].
