Few things are more rewarding than opening a brick-and-mortar store in your hometown, so we can only imagine what Awake NY’s creator feels.
Awake NY launched in 2012 in New York City and is the brainchild of former Supreme brand director and Queens native Angelo Baque. Well loved by celebrities such as Rihanna, Bad Bunny, and Lewis Hamilton (to name a few), the brand is known for thriving on, being inspired by, and capturing the unique and enthralling spirit of NYC.
The brand’s recently opened store is no different.
The location of Awake NY’s store is filled with history.
It was previously an old suit-making shop that was owned by the same family for over 40 years.
The space draws on significant emblems that represent Queens and Baque’s childhood being a physical embodiment of his upbringing and inspiration that led to the creation of Awake.
As a Latinx child making his mark in the fashion industry, Baque lacked the feeling of support and representation, the Awake NY concept store is meant to provide younger generations with the mentorship and the sense of community that Baque looked for as a young artist.
The store will also offer rotating collections from extended brand friends and family, perpetuating community, accessibility, and product offering that consumers can anticipate without “breaking the bank.”
Some of the highlights include:
-
Three original artworks by Alvin Armstrong
-
A mural by artist Larissa De Jesus Negron adorning the fitting room
-
Graffiti throughout the space by all-time great, JA.ONE
-
A Rocky’s Matcha Bar
-
Basketball court paneling, refurbished from a high school in Kentucky, used for the store’s flooring
