Case in point: one of the absolute best aspects of an NYC summer is the city’s vast array of public pools, many of which are completely free to use. Want to go big or go home (hopefully to an air-conditioned apartment)? The city’s largest pool is as iconic as it is massive: the Astoria Park Pool.
🏊 NYC’s Largest Pool
Nestled right between the grand spans of the RFK-Triborough and Hell Gate Bridges in Queens, the Astoria Park Pool is the undisputed crown jewel of the New York City public pool system.
Originally opened in 1936, this Olympic-sized spot is historic. At 330 feet long, it is the oldest and largest public pool in the five boroughs.
The pool deck offers spectacular, panoramic views of the East River and the Manhattan skyline, making it feel less like a municipal facility and more like a scenic waterfront resort. Whether you are looking to swim serious laps or just wade in the water to escape the humidity, its sheer scale ensures there is room for everyone.
🛠️ The Recent Renovations
To keep a century-old icon functioning for modern crowds, the city recently invested in a massive, comprehensive $19 million overhaul.
While the pool had to close for a painful 2023 season, it reopened to the public with state–of-the-art upgrades that successfully blended its historic Art Deco charm with 21st-century infrastructure.
The extensive renovations included:
- A brand-new, durable watertight pool shell liner spanning over 55,000 square feet.
- An entirely replaced gutter and drainage system.
- A complete overhaul of the mechanical and filtration systems, significantly improving water circulation and quality while reducing the pool’s environmental footprint.
And if you are looking to pair your swim with a park hang? The surrounding park is looking better than ever. The neighboring Great Lawn pathways just wrapped up a major reconstruction project, bringing fresh pavement, new benches, game tables, and drinking fountains to the immediate area.

The Astoria Park Pool is officially ready to welcome back heat-exhausted New Yorkers for the 2026 summer season.
- Opening Day: The pool will officially open for the summer on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
- Daily Hours: Outdoor pools generally operate from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily, with a mandatory break between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM for deep cleaning and water sanitization.
