You can’t talk about Asbury Park without talking about Bruce Springsteen. The Boss famously launched his career right here, naming his 1973 debut album Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. While he still makes surprise pop-up appearances around town, his spiritual home is The Stone Pony. Celebrating over 50 years as one of world’s most legendary rock clubs, this venue is a living museum of music history where icons like Southside Johnny and the E Street Band cut their teeth.
Even when Springsteen isn’t on stage, his presence anchors the entire local scene. If you happen to be in town over Father’s Day weekend, you can even catch the annual “Spring-Nuts” meet-and-greet at the Berkeley Backyard, where Boss superfans from all over the globe gather to celebrate his legacy.
Festivals and Concerts steps from the Sea
When the weather warms up, the music spills outside. The Stone Pony Summer Stage turns the venue’s parking lot into a massive outdoor amphitheater right on the oceanfront. This summer’s heavy-hitting lineup brings massive weekend energy:
- June Classics: Major multi-night runs from pop-punk royalty Yellowcard (with New Found Glory and Plain White T’s) alongside eclectic shows from Kurt Vile & The Violators and Jimmy Eat World.
- Late Summer Hits: Mid-August features jam-heavy acts like Andy Frasco & The U.N. and the Kitchen Dwellers, leading into a massive late-August weekend with alternative heroes Bleachers, Real Estate, and Toadies.
- The Return of Jazz: On June 28, the city is reviving the historic Asbury Park Jazz Fest for the first time in over a decade. This free outdoor festival takes over Sunset Park, offering an 8-hour marathon of smooth jazz, funk, and blues.
- The Ultimate Summer Send-Off: To close out the season, the massive Sea.Hear.Now Festival returns to North Beach and Bradley Park on September 19–20. This year’s massive oceanfront celebration features headliners Mumford & Sons, The Strokes, and The Offspring, alongside a professional surf competition and live art installations.

Note that while the boardwalk is free to stroll, a daily beach pass is required for sand access during the summer, which helps keep the shores pristine.

The Asbury Park Boardwalk isn’t your average, run-of-the-mill carnival strip—it is a beautifully preserved architectural gem blended with modern, local-first culture.

To get there, just hop on the NJ Transit North Jersey Coast Line directly from New York Penn Station. The ride takes just under two hours; depending on the time of day, you’ll either have a seamless direct run or a quick, easy transfer across the platform at Long Branch.
Once you arrive at the Asbury Park station, you’re right in the heart of town—only a short walk down Cookman Avenue to downtown dining, and about a fifteen-minute stroll straight to the boardwalk and beach.
