For New Yorkers, coffee might as well be its own food group. So nothing stings quite like paying $6 for a cup that’s burnt, watery, or just…bad. And with more than 1,700 coffee shops across the city, ending up with a mediocre cup happens more often than we’d like. The good news: the newly released World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops list just dropped, giving caffeine fiends a much-needed cheat sheet on where to sip next. Even better–NYC’s own Arcane Estate Coffee snagged the #12 spot.
Tucked along Cornelia Street in the West Village, Arcane Estate Coffee is the result of a decade of exploration in Panamanian coffee. And yes, that matters–Panamá has been a global leader in specialty coffee since the early 2000s thanks to its unique microclimates and meticulous producers. Arcane sits right in the middle of that movement.
The beans are sourced almost entirely from founder Edgar Acosta-Masferrer’s family land in Panamá’s western province of Chiriquí, plus a small circle of neighboring producers. The region’s high elevations, volcanic soil, and distinct microclimates create ideal growing conditions–and some of the most celebrated coffee farms in the world.
Because these beans come from tiny harvests, supply is limited. For New Yorkers, that means sipping light, nuanced cups that rarely make it into everyday café rotations.
Back in the West Village, Arcane’s menu rotates through different Panamanian coffees, with each pour highlighting a specific microclimate or processing method. The result feels less like grabbing a quick caffeine fix and more like a mini tasting.

The setting helps, too: dark wood paneling, natural stone counters, moody earth tones, and cozy details that invite you to slow down for a minute–something New Yorkers don’t always do.
The team celebrated the ranking on Instagram, writing:
We opened nine months ago with the goal of creating a café that could showcase what makes Panamanian coffee remarkable…Our approach has always been to make the work that happens on the farm more visible, within a space designed to give guests time to appreciate the details from soil to cup…Thank you to the producers we are honored to work with…And to our team for making each guest experience thoughtful and personal.

Now in its second year, the World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops ranking evaluates more than 15,000 cafés around the globe. Shops are judged on everything from coffee quality and barista expertise to innovation, sustainability practices, customer service, food and pastry programs, and overall atmosphere.
This year, Onyx Coffee Lab in Rogers, Arkansas claimed the No. 1 spot. In total, nine U.S. cafés made the global list.
