Some exciting news for NYC residents who love a weekend escape and beyond!
New York City is set to feel the impact of Amtrak’s most ambitious rail overhaul in decades, as the company moves forward with a sweeping modernization of its national fleet, according to a recent press release.
With the Northeast Corridor serving as one of the busiest passenger rail arteries in the United States, upgrades to short- and mid-distance services (including the Northeast Regional that runs through our very own Penn Station) signal faster, more reliable, and more standardized train travel along the East Coast’s most heavily trafficked routes.
What to Know: A Historic Investment in American Rail
Amtrak has begun the process of buying its largest-ever new fleet of long-distance trains. The goal is to modernize overnight and cross–country service, replacing railcars that are nearly 50 years old.
The plan includes more than 800 new railcars across 14 major routes. Working with the Federal Railroad Administration, Amtrak will also standardize its fleet by switching to a single-level design, replacing the current mix of train types to improve service and make maintenance easier.

What’s New: High-Tech Upgrades and Modern Amenities
This long-distance train order is just part of a bigger upgrade across the entire Amtrak system. Several improvements are already happening:
- Airo trains will start service in 2026. After launching on the Amtrak Cascades route, they’ll expand to the Northeast Regional, improving travel between Boston, New York City, and Washington, D.C.
- NextGen Acela trains are already being introduced on the Northeast Corridor, bringing faster service and upgraded onboard features.
- New ALC-42 locomotives are replacing older engines on long-distance routes. Amtrak is rolling out 125 in total, with most already delivered, offering better fuel efficiency and reliability.
The Timeline: From Proposals to Boarding
The road to a completely modernized rail system is a multi-year journey. Now that the formal request for proposals has been issued, the timeline is as follows:
- 2026: Procurement process officially begins; carbuilders prepare and submit bids.
- Late 2026: New Airo fleet begins service on the West Coast (Amtrak Cascades).
- Through 2027: Extensive evaluation of supplier proposals.
- End of 2027: Amtrak plans to announce the selected supplier for the 800+ railcar Long Distance contract.
- Beyond 2027: Manufacturing and phased rollout of the new Long Distance fleet.
