As the weather continues to warm in our favorite city, our classic go-to activities come out of hibernation. Strolling through our favorite parks to catch the latest blooms, having picnics by the water and…going for walks with alpacas?
Okay, that last one might feel a little new. Let’s rewind.
As our spring calendars start to fill up, it can sometimes feel like we’re cycling through the same activities year after year. Don’t get us wrong—there’s nothing quite like spring in NYC, with its gorgeous florals, easy escapes just beyond the city, and that first stretch of warm weather that makes even the smallest plans feel special. But if you’re looking for a fresh way to experience NYC’s most blooming season, well, that’s where we come in.
Just across the Hudson in New Jersey, Bluebird Farm offers a one-of-a-kind experience that might just be the most unexpectedly delightful spring outing in the tri-state: spending time with alpacas.
What to Know: The Bluebird Story
Located in the picturesque landscape of Peapack, New Jersey, Bluebird Farm was founded by Nick Villa as a family-owned sanctuary.
Villa’s mission was simple but impactful: to introduce local communities to the gentle, inquisitive nature of alpacas. Today, the farm serves as a peaceful retreat where visitors can learn about these “lovable furry friends” while enjoying the fresh air of the Garden State.
The Experience: More Than Just a Farm Visit
Bluebird Farm doesn’t just offer a walk-through; they offer curated immersion. Depending on your mood, you can choose from a variety of interactions:
- Alpaca Encounters & Halter Walks: Get up close and personal with the herd. You can learn to lead an alpaca on a halter, feeling their calm energy firsthand.
- Picnic with the Alpacas: For the ultimate spring date or group hang, the farm partners with Black Basket Luxury Picnics to provide a high-end outdoor dining experience right in the pasture.
- Wellness & Yoga: Find your zen during “Yoga with the Alpacas,” where the herd’s curious presence adds a layer of joy and grounding to your practice.
- Educational & Special Interests: The farm offers specialized programs for youth field trips, spinning demonstrations for fiber enthusiasts, and even inclusive experiences tailored for veterans and those with developmental challenges.

Because Bluebird Farm prioritizes the well-being of their animals and the quality of the guest experience, reservations are required.

How to Get There From NYC
One of the best parts of Bluebird Farm is its proximity to Manhattan. It’s close enough for a day trip but feels worlds away.
- By Car: It is approximately a 1-hour drive from Lower Manhattan via I-78 W or the NJ Turnpike.
- By Train: For those without a car, take the NJ Transit Gladstone Branch from New York Penn Station. The Peapack station is just a short rideshare (Uber/Lyft) away from the farm’s front gate at 44 Willow Ave.
