Barrymore Film Center: preserving American film history
The setting is almost as interesting as the music itself. Long before Hollywood became the epicenter of filmmaking, Fort Lee was one of the country’s earliest movie-making capitals. During the silent-film era, the town was home to around 17 studios and attracted some of the biggest names in the industry.
Opened in 2022, the Barrymore Film Center honors this legacy with a museum, rotating exhibition and film screenings. It is an Art Deco cultural destination many New Yorkers already know and love for its film festival, and soon it will celebrate one of cinema’s most beloved soundtracks.
How to get there from NYC
Reaching the venue from NYC is pretty straightforward. By car, the film center is just across the George Washington Bridge and the drive typically takes 20 minutes from Midtown Manhattan—10 from The Bronx in normal traffic.
However, public transportation is perhaps a better option. You can either take NJ Transit’s 158 bus from Port Authority Bus Terminal toward Fort Lee, or take a bus from the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal at 175th Street (the Route 4 Jitney offers non-stop service GW Bridge Plaza West).
