New Yorkers know that finding an apartment in the city that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg can feel like a full-time job in itself. Between sky-high rents, tiny living rooms, and the occasional kitchen that doubles as a hallway, finding a place that checks all the boxes without completely draining your bank account is no easy feat.
A little known fact, though? Some of the city’s most affordable neighborhoods are hiding in plain sight. And according to a new study, one Bronx neighborhood is leading the way when it comes to keeping rent prices low.
Belmont, in the Bronx, has the lowest average one-bedroom rent among 19 of NYC’s most-searched neighborhoods analyzed in a recent study by Apartments.com, at just $1,417 per month. Even better? The average three-bedroom apartment rents for $2,666 a month, meaning renters with roommates—or those simply looking for a little extra breathing room—could have considerably more options here than in many other parts of the city.
Meet Belmont, the Bronx neighborhood where your rent goes further
Belmont offers a little bit of everything that makes New York feel like New York, from bustling restaurant strips and neighborhood markets to major cultural attractions and green spaces.
The neighborhood is perhaps best known for Arthur Avenue, a beloved destination for Italian bakeries, specialty food shops, restaurants, and old-school markets. Often celebrated as one of the city’s great Italian-American enclaves, it’s the kind of place where a weekend errand can easily turn into a leisurely lunch and a few stops for something sweet.
And when you’re ready to trade the city streets for some fresh air, the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden are both nearby, offering plenty of opportunities to explore without leaving the borough.

Here’s how much apartments cost in Belmont
According to Apartments.com’s August 2026 data, Belmont’s average rents are notably lower than those in many of NYC’s most popular neighborhoods.
- One-bedroom apartment: $1,417 per month, averaging 425 square feet
- Three-bedroom apartment: $2,666 per month, on average
- Monthly rent budget of $4,000: Above the neighborhood’s average three-bedroom rent, potentially leaving room in the budget for other expenses
Of course, individual listings vary by size, condition, amenities, and location, but the averages offer a glimpse of just how far a renter’s budget can stretch here.
For comparison, the average one-bedroom rent in Hudson Yards reaches $5,710 per month, while Chelsea averages $5,390. That means Belmont’s average one-bedroom rent is less than a third of the price in Hudson Yards.
These findings are a reminder that while living in New York City can come with a hefty price tag, the neighborhood you choose can make a major difference in what you get for your money.
