A wall dedicated entirely to Sherlock Holmes and shelves stocked with AI techno-thrillers share space inside the oldest and largest mystery bookstore in the world. Operating in Tribeca, the Mysterious Bookshop has been selling crime, suspense, and detective fiction since it first opened its doors on Friday the 13th in April 1979.
Founded by mystery fiction expert Otto Penzler, the independent shop holds a massive inventory that spans the history of the genre. The store features an extensive Agatha Christie collection, including special editions like the 70th anniversary release of “The Mousetrap,” alongside other classic whodunits. However, the inventory is not limited to vintage detectives. The shop continuously updates its stock with contemporary, boundary-pushing literature, such as new techno-thrillers that address artificial intelligence.
According to Ryan Gilbert of the Mysterious Bookshop, these modern additions reflect the genre’s ability to act as a snapshot of current societal anxieties. Instead of traditional plots focused simply on who is lying, these new stories ask if readers can even trust the evidence or their own eyes.
A Hub for the Mystery Community
Beyond selling books, the 58 Warren St location serves as an active gathering space for fans of the genre. The store hosts over 100 events annually, filling the aisles with attendees for book club meetings, author readings, and special Q&A sessions. Notable figures in the mystery genre, such as “Knives Out” director Rian Johnson, have appeared to speak with crowds packed between the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
Store organizers are actively working to host even more gatherings in the future. By maintaining a busy calendar of author events and community discussions, the shop continues to anchor itself as a specialized literary destination in the city.
