Millions of New York homeowners are quietly getting a little relief on their school tax bill this fall, and if you haven’t seen your check yet, there’s a good chance it’s already on its way.
New York State’s STAR (School Tax Relief) program is in the middle of its 2026 mailing run, sending checks and direct deposits worth anywhere from $350 to $1,500 to eligible homeowners across the state, according to Lohud.
Governor Kathy Hochul’s office confirmed that more than 3 million homeowners statewide are in line to receive the benefit this year, and deliveries are rolling out region by region straight through the fall.
Here’s what to know and whether or not you’re eligible.
What STAR actually is, and why it matters right now
STAR stands for School Tax Relief, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: a state program designed to knock down what homeowners owe on their school property taxes.
There are two versions of it. Basic STAR is open to any eligible homeowner making $500,000 or less, while Enhanced STAR is reserved for homeowners 65 and older making $110,750 or less for 2026 benefits, per the state’s official eligibility page.
Most people receive their STAR benefit as a credit check or direct deposit rather than a reduction baked directly into their tax bill, which is why so many households are actively watching their mailbox right now instead of just seeing a lower number on a bill.
The state has said it aims to get every check out before each area’s school tax deadline, which is exactly why the mailing schedule varies so much depending on where you live.
The tool that tells you when your check is coming
Here’s the part that actually matters if you’re one of the homeowners still waiting: New York State runs a public STAR Credit Delivery Schedule lookup tool that shows exactly when checks started (or will start) going out in your specific area.
It only takes three steps.
- Select your county from the dropdown menu
- Choose your school district
- Pick your town or city
The tool will show the date the state began mailing STAR credit and eligibility letters to your area, and the Department of Taxation and Finance says to allow five to ten business days after that date for your check to actually show up.
One important caveat straight from the state: they cannot give you a specific delivery date, and it’s entirely normal for your check to arrive before or after your neighbor’s, even on the same block.
If you want to go a step further and see your actual payment history, the state’s separate Property Tax Credit Lookup tool updates in real time and shows whether your credit has already been issued, along with the exact amount and issue date, going back to 2018.
What to do if your check still hasn’t shown up
Timing has varied significantly by region this year.
According to Syracuse.com’s reporting, some school districts saw checks go out as early as June, while others, including districts with later school tax deadlines, aren’t expecting theirs until September.
If the delivery schedule tool shows checks have already gone out in your area but yours never arrived, the state’s advice is straightforward:
- First, check your school property tax bill. If you received a STAR exemption directly on the bill instead of a separate credit, there’s nothing further coming, you already got the benefit built into your tax bill.
- If you didn’t receive an exemption and the lookup tool confirms checks have gone out in your area, call the state’s STAR line directly at 518-457-2036.
For NYC-area homeowners specifically, most of the five boroughs and surrounding suburban counties are seeing checks distributed on a rolling basis through the fall, so if you’re in a downstate district and haven’t seen anything yet, the delivery schedule tool is the fastest way to confirm whether it’s simply not your area’s turn yet.
