Natürlich gibt es Spukhäuser in New York City, aber was ist mit den „normalen“ Orten in der Stadt, die das gleiche Gefühl vermitteln? Diese 20 Spukorte in und um New York City sind einen Besuch wert und versetzen dich in eine gespenstische Stimmung.
1. Woodlawn-Friedhof, The Bronx
Der Woodlawn-Friedhof ist einer der größten Friedhöfe von New York City und steht außerdem unter Denkmalschutz. Obwohl der Friedhof in der Bronx liegt, hat man den Eindruck, er befinde sich irgendwo auf dem Land. Der über 400 Hektar große Friedhof ist die ewige Heimat einiger berühmter Persönlichkeiten, darunter Miles Davis und Duke Ellington.

2. Washington Square Park, Greenwich Village

3. Machpelah Cemetery, Queens
Der Machpelah Cemetery befindet sich in Queens und ist die letzte Ruhestätte von Harry Houdini. Zum Zeitpunkt seiner Beerdigung gab es Gerüchte, dass sich in seinem Grab ein Geheimfach befand. Das konnte bisher nicht bewiesen werden…
Nach seinem Tod fanden an seinem Grab zahlreiche Séancen statt, und die örtliche Polizei ist dafür bekannt, dass sie an Halloween immer noch an diesem Ort patrouilliert.

4. Das Algonquin Hotel
Viele sagen, dass das Algonquin Hotel immer noch als eines der gruseligsten Hotels in New York gilt, in dem sich der Legende nach die Dichterin Dorothy Parker, der Schauspieler Harpo Marx und der Dramatiker George Connell noch immer posthum aufhalten. Manche behaupten sogar, dass ein Foto von Dorothy Parker von der Wand gefallen ist und dass Kinder hören konnten, wie sie sie anschrie, weil sie zu laut war.

5. White Horse Tavern, West Village

6. Haus des Todes, Greenwich Village
Das „Haus des Todes“ ist eines der berühmtesten Spukhäuser in New York City. Es befindet sich in der 14 West 10th Street und soll von mindestens 22 Geistern heimgesucht werden. In diesem Haus lebte einst der Schriftsteller Mark Twain, und man sagt, dass sein Geist noch immer durch das Treppenhaus des Hauses spukt.

7. St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery, East Village
Kirchen können im besten Fall ziemlich gruselige Orte sein. Eine Kirche, in der der Geist eines einbeinigen Holländers wohnt, ist also kein Ort, den wir sonntags wirklich gerne besuchen. Das Gebäude steht auf dem Friedhof des Gouverneurs von Neu-Amsterdam, Peter Stuyvesant, von dem es heißt, dass er den sonntäglichen Gottesdienst stört, indem er die Glocken läutet, Hymnen auf Niederländisch singt und das Geräusch seines Holzbeines in der Kirche hört.

8. Morris Jumel-Villa, Washington Heights
Dieses Haus beherbergt die wohl vielseitigste Sammlung von Geistern, darunter eine sprechende Großvateruhr und ein Soldat, der wie in Harry Potter aus einem Gemälde tritt! Aber die bei weitem gruseligste Geschichte ist die von Eliza Jumel, die nach der Scheidung von ihrem zweiten Mann, dem ehemaligen Vizepräsidenten Aaron Burr, starb, nachdem man ihr nachsagte, ihren ersten Mann ermordet zu haben.
Die meisten Geistergeschichten beruhen auf den Aussagen einer einzigen, vielleicht nicht ganz so zuverlässigen Person, aber eine ganze Gruppe von Schulkindern wurde Zeuge, wie Jumel in einem violetten Kleid erschien und ihnen sagte, sie sollten alle still sein. Sie schien bei ihrem Erscheinen Wahnvorstellungen zu haben, was auf die Demenz zurückzuführen ist, an der sie zu Lebzeiten litt.

9. Die Campbell-Wohnung
Was einst das Büro von John W. Campbell war, ist heute eine üppige Cocktailbar, die großartige Drinks und ein einzigartiges Ambiente bietet. Die Legende besagt, dass hier gut gekleidete ältere Paare in den 1920er bis 50er Jahren ihre Drinks austauschten. Da die Bar in die Grand Central Station eingebettet ist, weiß man nie, wer dort vorbeikommt…

10. Psychiatrisches Zentrum Kings Park, Long Island
Die Kings Park Psychiatric Facility auf Long Island ist ein sehr beunruhigendes Beispiel dafür, was vor Jahren in psychiatrischen Anstalten geschah, und bietet ein schauriges Halloween-Erlebnis für diejenigen, die es besuchen wollen. Die Einrichtung war von 1885 bis 1996 in Betrieb und die verbliebenen Patienten wurden dann in eine neue Klinik verlegt. Seitdem ist sie verlassen, was sie zu einem der gruseligsten Orte New Yorks macht.

11. New Amsterdam Theater, Midtown
Man sagt, dass der Geist der Schauspielerin Olive Thomas in diesem New Yorker Theater herumspukt und sich an die Flasche mit den Pillen klammert, an denen sie eine Überdosis genommen hat. Schauspieler und Bühnenarbeiter des Broadway-Theaters zollen Olive ihren Respekt, indem sie sich von einem Foto von ihr verabschieden, das neben der Bühnentür hängt. Warum tun sie das? Weil Olive dafür bekannt ist, dass sie ein wenig jähzornig ist, Störungen in der Bühnentechnik verursacht und mit Männern flirtet, bevor sie durch eine Wand verschwindet.

12. Sleepy Hollow, Westchester
Jeder kennt die Legende von Sleepy Hollow und den unheimlichen Reiter ohne Kopf. Nur etwa eine Stunde mit der MetroNorth von Grand Central entfernt befindet sich die Stadt, in der die Legende spielt. Machen Sie eine Geisterfahrt mit dem Heu oder tauchen Sie bei einem Spaziergang durch die Stadt in die Welt von Washington Irving ein.

13. Brittany Hall, NYU
Einer der spukhaftesten Orte in New York City ist ein altes Hotel, das zu einem Studentenwohnheim der NYU umfunktioniert wurde. Die Legende besagt, dass ein achtjähriges Mädchen namens Molly 1929 in einen Aufzugsschacht gefallen ist und seitdem im Wohnheim umherstreift. Die Leute haben antiquierte Stühle gesehen, die Türen blockieren, geisterhafte Gesichter gesehen und mysteriöses Klopfen gehört. Ein Hausverwalter empfiehlt, „Spiel nicht mit mir, Molly“ zu sagen, wenn man sie sieht, und alles wird wieder gut. Ja, als ob wir lange genug hier bleiben würden.

14. Das Dakota, Central Park West
Das Dakota ist zwar als der Ort bekannt, an dem der ehemalige Beatle John Lennon von Mark Chapman erschossen wurde, hat aber eigentlich eine längere Geschichte des Paranormalen. Lennon wurde Berichten zufolge von Yoko Ono beim Klavierspielen gesehen, und der Musiker selbst berichtete, er habe eine weinende Frau im Gebäude gesehen (aber andererseits sagte er auch, er sei das „Walross coo coo ca choo“, also…). Andere haben ein kleines Mädchen und einen erwachsenen Mann mit dem Gesicht eines Kindes gesehen. Igitt.

15. Hotel Chelsea, Chelsea
Die berühmtesten Geister in diesem Hotel sind Sid Vicious und Nancy Spungen. Das Punkrock-Paar wohnte im Hotel, als Spungen mit einer Stichwunde im Unterleib gefunden wurde, die vermutlich von Vicious stammte (der kurz darauf an einer Überdosis Heroin starb). Ein weiterer berühmter Spuk ist Dylan Thomas, der im Hotel starb, nachdem er in der nahe gelegenen White Horse Tavern eine Alkoholvergiftung erlitten hatte (erinnern Sie sich?), was ihn zu einem der bekanntesten Geister in New York City macht.

15. Einer zu Lande, zwei zu Wasser, West Village
Dieses Restaurant war einst das Kutschenhaus von Alexander Hamilton und seiner Tochter Theodosia, und ihre Geister spuken noch immer im Haus. Mitarbeiter und Gäste berichten von seltsamen Vorkommnissen: flackerndes Licht, Geister, die Gäste schubsen, und Ohrringe von Frauen, die an der Bar sitzen, verschwinden immer wieder.

16. Blood Manor, Tribeca
Dieses Gebäude, das heute eines der unheimlichsten Spukhäuser in New York City beherbergt, hat seine eigenen schaurigen Geschichten. Der bahnbrechende Fotograf Matthew Brady fotografierte hier in den 1850er Jahren einige der berühmtesten (und berüchtigtsten) Persönlichkeiten des Landes sowie Kriegssoldaten… und als er den Film im dritten Stock entwickelte, erschienen auf jedem Foto Erscheinungen, die über dem Kopf des Motivs schwebten, und diejenigen, die sich näher an der Linse befanden, erschienen mit völlig schwarzen Augen. Im Laufe der Jahre berichteten andere Mieter des Gebäudes, sie hätten das leise Knipsen eines Fotos gehört, Schreie von jungen Männern und andere Spukerscheinungen, die sogar zu mysteriösen Todesfällen und Unfällen führten.
17. Billop Conference House, Staten Island
Der britische Loyalist Christopher Billop baute dieses Haus in den 1700er Jahren und tötete angeblich eine Dienerin, die verdächtigt wurde, für die Patrioten zu spionieren. Heute wird behauptet, dass beide Parteien des Mordes in der Gegend herumlungern, und von Zeit zu Zeit patrouillieren Rotmäntel.

18. Merchant’s House Museum, NoHo
Das Merchant’s House Museum war einst im Besitz der Familie Tredwell und wurde von Gertrude Tredwell (der letzten Tredwell) bis zu ihrem Tod im Jahr 1933 bewohnt. Heute, fast 100 Jahre später, stöbert sie der Legende nach immer noch ab und zu in den Räumen des Museums herum. So sehr, dass sogar Geisterführungen für Gruppen angeboten werden.

19. Belasco-Theater
Das Belasco Theatre in Midtown beherbergt nicht nur erstklassige Unterhaltung, sondern auch einige geisterhafte Besucher. Der Besitzer David Belasco und „The Blue Lady“ lebten nicht nur in einem 10-Zimmer-Duplex-Penthouse-Apartment über dem Theater, sondern viele Quellen behaupten, sie hätten ihn auf der Bühne, vom Balkon aus und im Aufzug gesehen.

20. Dr. Best House & Medizinisches Museum, Upstate New York
Wenn Sie wirklich auf der Suche nach etwas Gruseligem sind und aus der Stadt herauskommen wollen, ist das Dr. Best House & Medical Museum in Middleburgh eine Reise wert. Das Dr. Best House ist ein viktorianisches Haus und eine Arztpraxis, die während des Bürgerkriegs in einer amerikanischen Kleinstadt diente. In dem Haus starben jedoch der Sohn des Arztes, seine junge Frau und Dr. Best selbst. Die Ermittler haben Aufnahmen von Klavierspiel und entfernten Stimmen aufgezeichnet. Und das in Kombination mit den alten medizinischen Geräten? Genug, um Sie auf Trab zu halten.
