O que é o Kwanzaa?
O Kwanzaa é um feriado anual que celebra a cultura, a unidade e o patrimônio afro-americano. Criado em 1966, esse feriado homenageia os valores sociais africanos e geralmente consiste em grandes festas, reuniões, troca de presentes e muito mais!
Quando é o Kwanzaa este ano?
O Kwanzaa deste ano começa em 26 de dezembro e vai até 1º de janeiro de 2024.
Como o Kwanzaa é comemorado?
O Kwanzaa é comemorado em uma semana, com cada dia representando um dos “Sete Princípios”. Confira abaixo os 7 princípios do Kwanzaa:
1. Umoja (Unidade): Lutar e manter a unidade na família, na comunidade, na nação e na raça.
2. Kujichagulia (Autodeterminação): Definir e nomear a nós mesmos, bem como criar e falar por nós mesmos.
3. Ujima (trabalho coletivo e responsabilidade): Construir e manter nossa comunidade juntos e fazer com que os problemas de nossos irmãos e irmãs sejam nossos problemas e resolvê-los juntos.
4. Ujamaa (economia cooperativa): Construir e manter nossas próprias lojas, estabelecimentos comerciais e outros negócios e lucrar com eles juntos.
5. Nia (Propósito): Fazer de nossa vocação coletiva a construção e o desenvolvimento de nossa comunidade a fim de restaurar nosso povo à sua grandeza tradicional.
6. Kuumba (Criatividade): Fazer sempre o máximo que pudermos, da maneira que pudermos, a fim de deixar nossa comunidade mais bonita e benéfica do que a herdamos.
7. Imani (Fé): Acreditar de todo o coração em nosso povo, nossos pais, nossos professores, nossos líderes e na justiça e vitória de nossa luta.
Com esses temas em mente, a cada dia um princípio diferente é enfocado, o que corresponde a uma vela acesa em um kinara (castiçal). O princípio da umoja (unidade) é discutido na primeira noite e a vela preta central é acesa. No último dia do Kwanzaa, as famílias desfrutam de um banquete africano, chamado karamu.

1. Comemore o Kwanzaa no Brooklyn Children’s Museum
Este ano é a 16ª celebração anual do Kwanzaa no Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Junte-se ao museu para 5 dias de música ao vivo, demonstrações de dança, apresentações de palavras faladas, criação de arte, comida e muito mais! O programa “explorará as ideias por trás dos 7 princípios do Kwanzaa, levando os visitantes a uma viagem no tempo até a década de 1960, onde eles explorarão as culturas de diferentes locais do sul e nordeste dos Estados Unidos”. 2. Kwanzaa Crawl
Participe do 6º Kwanzaa Crawl anual, que é um bar crawl no Brooklyn que atrairá milhares de pessoas para a temporada de festas! Mais de 50 grupos formados por milhares de pessoas explorarão mais de 30 estabelecimentos de propriedade de negros em sete bairros! Cheia de comidas e bebidas, música e muita diversão, essa tradição anual é ótima para ajudar as empresas de propriedade de negros durante a temporada de Kwanzaa! 3. PaleyLand Holiday Extravaganza
Aberta agora, essa experiência de férias inclusiva celebra não apenas o Kwanzaa, mas também o Natal, o Hanukkah e o Dia dos Três Reis. Você encontrará exposições de férias experimentais, exibições de férias com o tema Kwanzaa e artes e artesanato. O rico acervo de mídia relacionada ao Kwanzaa do Paley Center faz deste o lugar perfeito para aprender sobre o feriado e, ao mesmo tempo, comemorar! Saiba mais aqui.

4. Kwanzaa: A Regeneration Celebration no The Apollo Theater
Em sua 18ª apresentação no lendário Apollo Theater, no Harlem, esse espetáculo de Kwanzaa celebrará as principais características do feriado: família, comunidade e cultura. Por meio da dança, da palavra falada e da música, você poderá desfrutar de uma apresentação noturna centrada na unidade, na autodeterminação, no compartilhamento e na retribuição às comunidades locais. O show será no dia 30 de dezembro, com apresentações às 14h e às 19h30min.

5. Kwanzaa Film Festival
Esse festival de cinema gratuito exibirá diferentes filmes de origem afro-americana que celebram as raízes do Kwanzaa. É um evento de arrecadação de fundos, o que significa que doações são aceitas e haverá muitas oportunidades excelentes! Haverá música, dança, networking, acendimento de velas de Kwanzaa e um círculo de solidariedade com os fundadores dos filmes. O evento acontece de 26 de dezembro a 1º de janeiro.
