New Yorkers, get your lucky numbers ready.
Wednesday night’s (August 27th) Powerball jackpot has soared to $815 million, making it the 7th largest prize in the game’s history — and one of the biggest jackpots of the year so far.
The massive pot comes after no one matched all six numbers in Monday’s drawing, when the grand prize was $750 million. The winning numbers then were 16, 19, 34, 37, 64, with a red Powerball of 22.

So how big is Wednesday’s jackpot?
If someone hits the jackpot this Wednesday (August 27), they’ll get the choice between:
- The full $815 million annuity, paid out in 30 annual payments that increase by 5% each year.
- Or a $367.9 million lump-sum cash payout — the option most winners choose.
Of course, that’s before taxes.
Federal withholding alone takes 24% right off the top, and depending on your taxable income, the IRS could claim up to 37% in total.
In New York, there’s also up to 10.9% state tax on lottery winnings.
Still, even after taxes, you’re looking at hundreds of millions.

This will be the 38th consecutive Powerball drawing without a grand prize winner.
The last time someone took home the jackpot was May 31, 2025, when a California player won $204.5 million with a cash value of $91.6 million.
Long streaks like this are exactly what push the jackpots higher and higher. Powerball’s odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, which makes big rollovers common — and headline-making prizes inevitable.
The record prize in Powerball history is still the mind-boggling $2.04 billion jackpot, won in California in November 2022.
When is the drawing on Wednesday?
The next Powerball drawing happens Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 10:59 pm ET.
Drawings are held three times a week: Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday nights.
Ticket sales in New York close at 10 pm on draw nights, so don’t wait until the very last minute if you want in.
Where to buy a Powerball ticket in NYC / how to play
Want to test your luck and enter the draw? There’s a couple ways to do it:
Buy a Powerball ticket in-person
New Yorkers can purchase a lottery ticket in-person at any authorized New York Lottery retailer, like convenience stores, grocery stores, and gas stations that display the New York Lottery logo.
- Find a retailer. Use the “Find a Retailer” tool on the New York Lottery website to locate a store near you.
- Fill out a play slip or use Quick Pick.
- To choose your own numbers, fill out a Powerball play slip, selecting five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26.
- To have the numbers randomly generated by a computer, ask the cashier for a “Quick Pick” ticket.
- Decide on add-ons. For an extra $1, you can add the “Power Play” option, which multiplies non-jackpot winnings.
- Pay for your ticket. A standard Powerball ticket costs $2 per play.
- Be aware of the sales deadline. Powerball ticket sales in New York close at 10 pm on the night of the draw (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays).
