It’s not easy being green, but between the pints of Guinness and wannabe Riverdancers, everyone’s got a little Irish in them on March 17th. Here are 8 unique ways to embrace your Irish heritage (albeit fictional) in the name of St. Patrick.
1. Irish Breakfast
Start off the day with a hearty breakfast of green eggs and beer in the East Village or for something more traditional, head over to the Half King for a delicious serving of Irish bacon, beans and toast that’s sure to infuriate your cardiologist.
2. Rugby Match
Work off that black pudding by watching the London Irish and Saracens go head-to-head in Ireland’s version of football this Saturday at the Red Bull Arena.
3. Whiskey Tasting
OK, enough sports- where’s the craic? A good time, that is, and that’s just what you’ll find at King’s County Distillery in Brooklyn. Moonshine, bourbon and chocolate whiskey…we can’t think of a better way to remember your Irish ancestors.
4. Irish Literature
You’ve loosened up a bit with the Emerald Isle’s finest liquor, now it’s time to get schooled by Joyce, Wilde, Yeats and a few other of Ireland’s finest writers. Tavern on the Green is the perfect spot to sit back for some excellent readings, nibbles and music.
5. Irish Music
Speaking of traditional music, Paddy Reilly’s is a sweet spot to catch an Irish seisiún, or jam session, every Thursday night and it’s fit with a fiddle, flute and good jig. Hope you enjoy a pint of Gat (Guinness), because that’s all you’re gonna find on tap!
6. Pub Crawl
Let’s get back to the drinking. Party till the wee hours of the morning on one of these two St. Paddy’s Bar Crawls.
7. Leprechaun (1993) Showing
If anything will teach you never to steal a Leprechaun’s pot of gold, it’s a terrified Jennifer Aniston running around a South Dakota town in fear. The 90s cult classic will be playing at Brooklyn’s Nitehawk Cinema for those of you who want a three-foot man dressed in green to scare the sh*t out of you on March 17th.
8. DAYBREAKER NYC Leprechauns, Bling & Rainbows
Swap out that Guinness for some green juice at Stage 48’s luck-fest of champions, a health-centered dance party with epic DJs worth way more than a pot of gold. DAYBREAKER is all about sunrise love, mindfulness and mischief, so why not let this movement teach you the real meaning of “top of the morning to ya?”
