It’s a tough year to be a Queens commuter. The MTA has just confirmed that the 7 train is about to undergo a massive overhaul. While the end goal is a modernized, flood-proof ride, the immediate future involves a lot of detours and headaches.
Starting this weekend, New Yorkers will face significant service gaps that, in some cases, won’t fully resolve until May 2027.
Here’s everything you need to know to navigate the line without losing your mind.
🚨 The Immediate Hit: No Manhattan Service This Weekend
The first wave of disruptions begins Friday, May 8. If you were planning a late night trek between Queens and Hudson Yards, you’ll need a Plan B.
- The Dates: Friday, May 8 (11:30 pm) – Monday, May 11 (3:30 am)
- The Closure: No 7 train service between 74 St-Broadway (Queens) and 34 St-Hudson Yards (Manhattan)
- The Repeat: This same schedule will apply over Memorial Day Weekend (Friday, May 22 – Monday, May 25)
Pro Tip: Head to the E, F, M, or R trains at 74 St-Broadway to get into Manhattan.
🚉 May Rush Hour Survival Guide
The rest of May isn’t looking much better for weekday commuters. From May 11 through May 22, the 7 will be skipping several key stops to facilitate track work.
Skipped Stations (Manhattan-bound):
- 69 St
- 52 St
- 46 St-Bliss St
- 33 St-Rawson St
How to get around it:
- Heading to a skipped station? Ride the 7 to Woodside-61 St, 40 St-Lowery St, or Queensboro Plaza, then double back on a Flushing-bound train
- Leaving a skipped station? Take a Flushing-bound train to 40 St-Lowery St, Woodside-61 St, or 74 St-Broadway and transfer to a Manhattan-bound train
Note: All trains at Woodside-61 St will board from the Flushing-bound platform during this window. Look for the temporary platform at 40 St-Lowery St to help ease the squeeze.

🏗️ The “Long Haul”: What to Expect Through 2027
The most daunting part of the MTA’s announcement is the long-term reconstruction. Beginning Monday, May 25 at 10:30 am, the 7 train enters a semi-permanent state of “Work in Progress.”
Through 2027:
- Flushing-bound trains will skip 52 St and 69 St in Queens for platform reconstruction
Rush Hour Shake-up:
- Manhattan-bound Express trains will run local from 74 St-Broadway to Queensboro Plaza
- Flushing-bound trains will run local from Queensboro Plaza to 61 St-Woodside, skipping 74 St-Broadway
How to get around it:
- For service to/from bypassed stations: Use nearby 46 St-Bliss St, Woodside-61 St, or 74 St-Broadway stations
- For service to skipped stations: Take the 7 train to Woodside-61 St or 74 St-Broadway and transfer to a Manhattan-bound 7
- For service from skipped stations: Take the 7 to 46 St-Bliss St or Woodside-61 St and transfer to a Flushing-bound 7
Note: All trains at Woodside-61 St will board from the Manhattan-bound platform during this time. Look for temporary platforms at 33 St-Rawson St, 40 St-Lowery St, and 46 St-Bliss St.

🚧 Why the Disruptions?
The service changes and disruptions are all part of an overhaul of the 7 line, which began in 2023. The project was originally slated for completion last year, though severe, unforeseen circumstances pushed the finish line to May 2027.
The Silver Lining:
While the next two years will be a test of patience, the project aims to bring the 7 line into the future:
- Flood Protection: Reinforcing the Steinway Tube to prevent the line from drowning during major storms
- Station Renewals: Full “state-of-good-repair” work from Woodside to Corona
- Accessibility: Faster elevators and better circulation at crowded hubs
