New York City cyclists, your “bike-in-the-living-room and hauling it up and down a five-story walk-up” era might finally be coming to an end. The NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) first unveiled plans in May 2024 to install 500 secure bike parking facilities across all five boroughs–and now, the initiative is gaining momentum with new details and an online portal for public feedback.
The news broke Monday, May 4, when NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn took to Twitter to confirm: “Secure Bike Parking is coming to NYC.”
Why This Matters for New Yorkers
With over 600,000 bike trips taken in the city daily, the lack of bike storage space is a notorious pain point. If you aren’t fighting for space in a cramped studio, you’re likely dodging bike thieves on the street.
According to Ben Furnas, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, the lack of secure parking is the #2 reason New Yorkers choose not to ride. This new network aims to fix that by providing high-tech, enclosed lockers right on the street.

The 4 Types of Parking Hubs Coming to Your Block
The DOT isn’t just dropping one-size-fits-all boxes. They have categorized the new structures into four distinct types to handle everything from your standard bike to heavy-duty cargo bikes:
- Standard Bikes: Category 1 – Small, enclosed structures for six standard bikes, installed in residential curb lanes
- Cargo/Adaptive Bikes: Category 2 – Small, enclosed structures for two oversized bikes, installed in residential curb lanes
- The Hub: Category 3 – Large, enclosed structures, installed on wide sidewalks, under elevated structures, in plazas, or on other City property
- Self-Locking Docks: Category 4 – Self-locking docks with e-micromobility charging ports, nstalled on wide sidewalks, in plazas, or potentially in curb lanes
While exact pricing is still under wraps, the DOT confirmed there will be both long-term (annual) and short-term (hourly) memberships. To keep the program equitable, discounted memberships will be available for low-income residents.

When Is It Happening?
While the DOT originally stated in May 2024 that all 500 facilities would be completed within five years, this latest announcement was a bit more vague on the finish line.
- What we know: Installation is officially set to begin later this year
- The mystery: The agency didn’t provide an updated timeline for when the full network will be finished
Have Your Say: Where Should They Go?
The DOT has launched a new online portal where you can pin the exact locations where you need storage most. They’ve already seen over 1,000 comments, but they want to know:
- What you ride (Standard, e-bike, cargo, etc.)
- How long you’ll stay (Overnight, weekends, or just a quick lunch stop)
- Must-have amenities (Charging ports, tire pumps, or repair stations)

Don’t Forget the New 2026 Bike Map
In addition to the parking news, the DOT just dropped the interactive 2026 NYC Bike Map. It’s the most up-to-date guide for finding protected bike lanes, conventional bike lanes, shared lanes, greenways, bike boulevards, and other important connections.
You can check out the digital version online or snag a free physical copy at your local library, bike shop, or other community center.
