Bars across the city are embracing the Halloween spirit with elaborate decorations, horror-themed menus, and interactive cocktails.
From skeletons scaling building facades to menus styled as explicit horror movie warnings, several venues have completely transformed into immersive seasonal pop-ups for October.
Creepy Cocktails and Theatrical Decor
The Haunting on 9th Street (649 E 9th St) serves drinks in unsettling vessels, including ceramic doll heads, clowns, and grinning jack-o-lanterns. The intimate bar space is draped in thick fake cobwebs and illuminated by string lights and candles.
Other venues are opting for theatrical grandeur. Lillie’s Victorian Establishment (249 West 49th St) has suspended life-sized skeletons, ghouls, and a creepy clown from its high ceilings, contrasting with the room’s ornate chandeliers. The bar pairs the elaborate decor with specialty drinks, including a cocktail topped with a flaming, torched citrus slice. Oscar Wilde (45 W 27th St) grabs attention right from the sidewalk, with skeletons climbing the red floral exterior of the building. Inside, a large projection screen plays a dancing skeleton loop while guests sip brightly colored drinks, including a vibrant green concoction garnished with a tiny witch hat and broomstick.
Rooftop Thrills and Horror Tributes
Dark Magic Hour at the Magic Hour Rooftop (485 7th Ave, 18th Floor) bathes its high-altitude space in deep red lighting. Bartenders in black gloves serve dark, sugar-rimmed martinis, while patrons can order from a tiered display of black cupcakes topped with red frosting.
Romeo’s (118 St Marks Pl) leans into campy horror movie nostalgia. The menu, presented in a black binder, opens with a stark warning page about the establishment’s unexplainable effects. The drink list features options named after cult classics, such as a “Carrie-Cola” and an Old Fashioned riff called “Children of the Corn.” Patrons snack on bowls of popcorn while sitting alongside quirky decor, including a sequined pillow bearing the face of Nicolas Cage.
These seasonal bar transformations provide immersive spaces for those looking to celebrate the holiday through specialty cocktails and dramatic set design.
