Arguably the biggest fashion event of the year in New York City is getting a makeover. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has officially unveiled the theme for the 2027 Met Gala, and this time, it’s all about finding the extraordinary in the everyday.
As The Met shared earlier today, it is titled ‘extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.‘ The Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition will explore how designers transform familiar wardrobe staples and ordinary materials into remarkable works of art.
The collection will be curated by Andrew Bolton alongside Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben. After the fashion’s biggest party on May 3, the exhibition will be open to the public the following week through January 9, 2028.
So what does the theme actually mean?
The theme actually feels like it’s tapping into the closet of everyday New Yorkers. Think everyday essentials: t-shirts, blue jeans, trench coats mixed in with some extraordinary fashion materials like metal, paper and plastic.
In an interview with Vogue, Bolton shared more about the inspiration behind the theme and how it came to be:
I think that fashion is so often associated with the pursuit of the new and the ephemeral that I’m really interested in how possibilities can emerge through returning to familiar things. I think there’s something hopeful about discovering how much imagination the everyday can hold.
The theme will encourage visitors to reconsider clothes and materials they might overlook in their daily lives. The goal is to challenge designers’ craftsmanship by having them take familiar objects and clothing we may take for granted and transform them into elevated art.
What does this mean for the celebrity dress code?
While the official celebrity dress code has yet to be announced, the theme leaves plenty of room for interpretation.
Could we see celebrities reinventing their favorite wardrobe basics? Perhaps a dramatically reimagined graphic T-shirt, maybe a jean-on-jean moment like Britney & Justin at the 2001 AMAs, or even a gown made from a variety of things we see around the streets of New York City?
One thing is certain: this theme pushes designers and celebrities alike to question the stereotypical idea that fashion needs to be extravagant and luxurious to make a statement
And considering the Met Gala’s reputation for its jaw dropping red-carpet moments, New Yorkers are in for a show for whatever may come up those iconic Met steps.
When is the 2027 Met Gala?
Fashion’s grandest stage will transform once again when the freshly themed Met steps are finally unveiled on Monday, May 3. It follows its traditional first-Monday-in-May tradition.
The accompanying exhibition, “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” will open to the public the following week on May 9, 2027, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and remain on display through January 9, 2028.
