Despite her unfortunate surname (politically speaking that is), Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon is eyeing a run in the 2018 gubernatorial election against current governor Andrew Cuomo.

The 2018 gubernatorial election is not as far away as it seems. In no time our local news cycles will be occupied with spin for potential candidates.

We live in uncertain political times, that fact can’t be lost current Governor Andrew Cuomo, he faces stiff competition from both sides of the aisle. His latest competition may come from Cynthia Nixon, star of  Sex and the CityThe question is; if a reality TV star can become president, why can’t the star of an iconic NYC based TV show become governor?

The actor, better known to many as Miranda, isn’t as silly a candidate as she might appear on the surface. Nixon is no slouch in the political world and has been an outspoken activist for many years.

In a report by nydailynews, the executive director of the teacher’s union-supported Alliance for Quality Education, Billy Easton, had this to say:

“She’d be a fantastic candidate […] She’s the sort of unusual suspect who actually excites people in this moment of time,”

Easton has worked with Cynthia Nixon on state education issues where she has been outspoken on our current governor’s mishandling of educational resources.

Nixon has also been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights, throwing several fundraisers for NYC non-profits. Notable is her emotionally charged speech at the LGBT Solidarity rally outside Stonewall back in February.

Still not sold on Nixon as a legitimate candidate? Well, Mayor Bill de Blasio is, in 2014 he appointed her on the advisory board for the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City.

If the Emmy-winning actor does reveal herself as a candidate she will face off against some stiff Democrat competition. Former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara and former State Senator Terry Gipson have both been rumored as potential candidates. “Crusader” prosecutor, former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, was rumored to run back in May.
