Fans of Coney Island’s infamous Mermaid Parade may be in for some bad news in the near future… the parade needs your help!
This June 17, those of us that aren’t wrapped in sequins, shells, and body paint will be sat on the sidelines ‘gramming the hell out of the nautical themed madness that is Coney Island’s Mermaid Parade. …but what if we told you that Coney Island USA, the non-profit that organizes the parade, is in such deep financial water that the parade might not happen at all?
“Coney Island USA” operates a multi-arts center, and beyond the parade, they organize the Coney Island Circus Sideshow, the Coney Island Museum, Coney Island Film Festival and much more. The Mermaid Parade consumes a massive chunk of what is a seemingly ever tighter arts budget. Thanks to higher permit and insurance costs the parade organizers are forced to turn to crowdfunding to help ensure the event takes place.
The parade has operated at a loss for years, the crowdfunding campaign money would be used to cover the cost of security, city permits, insurance, porta-potties, tents, and trucks… basically, a little of everything.
Their crowdfunding campaign, as it stands as of writing this article, has raised $1,449 of the $50,000 that Coney Island USA needs. Head HERE to donate and help put this year’s Mermaid parade on the map as one of the best yet!
